Overview

Maya Novak is a fictional character created by author Aaron D. Stott and the central counterpart to Laura Chambers across several novels and pulp adventures, including Miss Chambers and the Countess, Tell Me About the Lions, and the Laura Chambers vs. pulp science fiction series.

Maya is an urban planner, scientist, and disruptive presence in every world she enters — a student who rearranges shared library tables into a conspiracy, a Carpathian Countess who has outlived centuries, a survivor of the Ice Age, and a mid-century researcher who refuses to let the impossible stay classified. Where Laura observes, Maya acts.

Biography

Maya is introduced as a disruptive urban planning student in Laura Chambers Is the Apocalypse in a Sweater, where she challenges Laura Chambers to look up from her notes and see the world that is actually being built around them. In later novels she appears as the immortal Countess of a remote Carpathian castle, a companion surviving the Ice Age, and a scientist who meets impossible creatures head-on.

Her training is in systems: cities, grids, cause and effect. She is less interested in why a thing is old than in what it will do next.

Personality

Bold, restless, and impatient with rules that exist only because no one has broken them yet. Maya asks the question Laura is still framing. She is protective, strategic, and often the first person in the room to treat the impossible as a problem that can be solved.

Relationships

Laura Chambers — In every world, in every timeline, Maya finds Laura. A quiet archaeology student. A Victorian scholar cataloguing manuscripts. A doctor facing radioactive monsters. The names and centuries change, but the recognition is immediate.
