The Eleven-Second Signal

Night had settled over Hargrove University.

Dr. Laura Chambers stood at the spectrometer console with one hand flat on the metal housing, as though she could coax information out through the casing. Her hair was pulled back into a loose ponytail, already slipping free at the temples. She was frowning.

She checked the calibration. Not a decimal out of place.

The numbers were wrong. The kind of wrong that meant something. They crept across the narrow strip of graph paper in a jagged line, the stylus scratching softly as the drum turned.

“That’s not possible,” she said.

She had said it the same way both times.

Behind her, Maya Novak sat sideways on a lab counter with a notebook balanced on her knee and a half-finished pastrami sandwich balanced on the notebook. She reached out and pushed Laura’s hair back into place, fingers lingering just long enough to be noticed.

“You’ve said that before,” Maya said.

Laura didn’t answer. Her eyes hadn’t left the trace.

At the centre of it all, sealed inside a shielded sample mount beneath the spectrometer’s beam, sat the object responsible for Laura’s architectural hair. A blackened chip of rock no larger than a poker chip. Pitted surface, irregular edges, scorched by forces that had nothing to do with anything on Earth. Professor Aldrich in the geology department had logged it as Meteorite Sample 7-F upon arrival three weeks ago. It had crossed four billion years of space before landing in a Nebraska wheat field.

Laura forgot she was holding a sandwich.

A spike jumped across the display.

Then another.

She adjusted a dial and ran the scan again.

The instrument hummed. The results defied every existing catalogue of known isotopes.

“Unidentified isotope,” Laura said quietly. The way a doctor says a diagnosis before the patient is in the room. “Emission pattern every eleven seconds. Regular as a clock.”

Maya turned a page in her notes. Then she looked up.

“You realise normal couples watch movies on a Wednesday night.”

“Normal couples don’t have unidentified extraterrestrial isotopes.”

“Fair,” Maya said.

Laura leaned closer. She reached for the alignment control and nudged the spectrometer arm a fraction of a degree to the left.

The beam tightened.

Another spike appeared, sharper this time, cleaner. The emission curve was unlike anything in the reference database. It had the shape of something natural, but nature, as far as anyone had established, did not produce isotopes with this particular electron configuration.

Laura’s frown deepened. “Strange,” she said.

From behind her came the soft scrape of wax paper across a countertop.

“You haven’t eaten,” Maya said.

“I have.”

“That was a bite.”

Laura reached back without looking. Maya put the sandwich in her hand.

Maya steadied the notebook against her knee with one hand and rested the other on Laura’s back.

The lab door creaked open.

Neither of them noticed.

The campus lab cat, which night security called “That Damn Animal,” knew which buildings stayed warm and snuck in through the gap.

It padded across the tile floor, tail erect, and jumped onto the counter by the secondary bench.

Maya spotted it.

“You have a saboteur,” she said.

Laura glanced over her shoulder.

The cat was already at the spectrometer housing, examining it with great interest.

“Oh, no you don’t,” Laura said.

She moved toward it, one hand outstretched, voice dropped to the low, firm register that had, historically, a roughly forty percent success rate with the cat and a considerably higher rate with graduate students.

The cat flicked its tail.

And in doing so, it contacted the spectrometer alignment arm.

The knob turned.

A thin beam of hard radiation swept suddenly across the bench in a short, bright arc — the precise, calibrated kind that was utterly not supposed to go anywhere near the rest of the room.

Laura lunged for the cutoff switch—

a glance, fast, instinctive—Maya still clear of the beam—

then she hit it.

She was fast. She was, in fact, very fast.

She was not quite fast enough.

The beam passed over the secondary bench, the clamped ring stands, and the stack of unread journal articles.

It passed directly over the glass terrarium on the far counter.

Inside, a small crested gecko froze on its piece of bark. Its skin glowed — a dull green light under the scales, pulsing once, twice.

Then nothing.

Laura killed the power.

The machine fell silent.

The room was still.

Even the cat had stopped moving.

“What was that?” Maya said.

Laura was already at the console, her fingers moving quickly across the controls. “Three seconds. Maybe four.”

“The gecko—”

“Was in the exposure path.”

“Yeah.” Laura’s jaw tightened. “I know.”

Maya was already beside the terrarium, crouching low, her dark eyes level with the glass. Laura joined her. Their shoulders met and stayed that way, neither of them shifting to make space.

The gecko clung to its piece of bark. Perfectly still. Fine, as far as either of them could tell without a Geiger counter held to the animal’s skin.

“Is it supposed to do that?” Maya asked. “The glowing.”

“No.” Laura crossed the room and crouched beside the glass. “Exposure would have been minimal. The sample shielding absorbed most of the initial output before the arm displaced.”

“Lau, you sound like someone trying to convince herself.”

“I’m making a preliminary assessment.”

“That’s the same thing.”

Laura carefully opened the terrarium lid.

The gecko shifted on its bark.

Laura examined the animal’s dorsal surface, ran her eye across its limbs and tail, and checked the adhesive pads on its feet. No burns. All present. All appeared functional.

She replaced the lid.

“It’s fine,” she said.

“Right,” Maya said. “Like the man-eating plants were fine.”

Laura didn’t look at her. “This isn’t the same.”

“Mm.”

Maya didn’t move. “You done?” she said.

Laura hesitated. Then, quieter: “Yeah.”

For a moment none of them moved, the two women and the gecko forming a brief, unlikely tableau in the dim lab, the cat watching from its counter with studied indifference. Maya tilted her head.

“That animal is looking at you as if it understood something.”

The gecko’s eyes had not moved from Laura.

“Reptiles don’t understand radiation,” Laura said.

“Comforting,” said Maya.

She opened the lab notebook to the day’s entry and took up her pen, which had a cracked barrel and wrote in a line that veered upward to the right when she wasn’t paying attention.

She paid attention now.

2107 hours. Accidental exposure event. Duration: approximately 3.2 seconds. Beam originated from 7-F sample mounting. Gecko terrarium (Specimen: Charles) within exposure path. Momentary luminescent response observed — duration under 2 seconds, ceased upon power cutoff. Animal appears unaffected.

She paused, staring at the last line. She then crossed out “appears unaffected” and wrote “is apparently unaffected.”

She closed the notebook.

“Let’s go home.”

Maya was already off the counter, shrugging into her coat. The cat watched them both with the supreme unconcern of someone who was planning to stay.

“You’re leaving the experiment?” Maya asked.

“I’m leaving the gecko under observation.”

“The gecko can’t take notes.”

“That’s what the radiation detector is for.”

They switched off the lights. Maya’s hand found Laura’s as they headed for the door. The lab dimmed to the soft amber glow of standby equipment: the steady glow of status indicators, the green numerals of the console clock, the dim light of the sample chamber housing.

Laura stopped at the door.

She looked back at the terrarium.

Charles looked back at her.

She pulled the door shut.

The hallway lights clicked off behind them as they walked toward the stairwell, their footsteps fading. The floor polisher droned somewhere below. Outside, a wind had come up off the campus lawns, rattling the third-floor windows in their frames.

Inside the dark lab, the gecko turned its head toward the empty room.

It was quiet.

Then the radiation detector on the spectrometer clicked once.

Then, after a brief pause, it clicked again.
